Technical problem, looking for input

My LCD tv has developed a darkening of some of the pixels in the left
third of the screen. It doesn't occur all of the time, only when the
tone is within a specific range somewhere between medium gray and
black.

First, does this problem have a name that technicians would
understand? Second, is this a problem that can even be fixed?
