I have a 50" Toshiba analog receiver which is 7 years old and still working
great. PC Magazine's John C. Dvorak mentioned in the Sep 21, 2004 isue that
Samsung and 921 will "downconvert the HD signal for you."

Does anyone have any experience or model numbers or reviews? This is
something I have waited for .... to get a better standard TV picture....

Thanks!

Tim

I have used a Digital HD Tuner for the Analog 480i

down convert many times..... Usually to Test for

HD TV reception 'signal strength' at friends home locations

out of town.... You get a very sharp Analog TV picture

and with bars IF the HD Program content is 16:9 HD or

HD upconvert....

What you need for Digital reception (Std Def or Hi Def)

is a OTA Digital tuner/OTA Set top Box/

OTA Receiver (all the same)

such as a Walmart $199 STB or Samsung T-351 STBox $350....

So $199 Walmart box, $26 UHF Antenna like Channel Master

3021 4 bay bow tie (good up to 40 miles plus),

RG-6 Antenna Cable and S-Video 6' Cable (hope your

Analog set has an S-Video input port)...

and a Red/White audio cable.....

Go to http://www.antennaweb.org And enter your

5 or 9 digit ZIP Code to Find the 'Digital Channels'

that your HD receiver can pick up.. (Lass Chan column info)...

Aiming direction & distance are important.. as well as

having no metal walls nor metal siding.

Note also that a UHF antenna (Chans 14 thru 59) has trouble

picking up VHF digital channels (2 thru 13)...

It works OK on Chans 7 thru 13 IF Signal Strength is High....

The HD Program content viewed in 480i analog Format..

will be very 'sharp' BUT the biggest headache

is not being able to Zoom or stretch a 16:9 Program on

a 4:3 screen..... This is a nice $250 introduction

to HDTV availability & content...

You might also Go to HDTV site:

http://www.hdtvpub.com and enter your ZIP Code

to read what other folks in your ZIP receive..

THis sites HD info is hit & miss due to different

HD fan response levels....

I have a Dish 6000 - it did as you ask for the last 3 years. I truly
enjoyed watching HD on my old 27 inch GE. Then I bought a 32" SANYO
HDTV - no comparison. SD is out and HD is in! In my book - anyway....
I don't know that you will get a better std picture - it is what it is
on the 50". You will only gain the ability to watch different
programming (like Discovery HD?) - in widescreen. Come to think of it,
I always thought the HD colors were superior to my NTSC colors - don't
know why.

Cheers,
Dave - N2LAK
