My component manual states that, for better picture quality,
I should hook up the S-video with audio/video cables.
It clearly states that, since S-video carries only the video signal,
both white and red audio cables must be hooked up.
What is not clear *to me* is whether the yellow video cable
should also be hooked up, in addition to the S-video cable.

Do I need both S-video and yellow video cables hooked up?

If not, will hooking up the yellow video cable be harmful
- either physical damage or picture quality degradation?

If you have a red, white, and yellow cable ..the red/white are the audio and
the yellow is the S-video. No other cable needed.

The yellow cable is called "composite" video and carries only video,
thus requiring red and white audio cables as well. "S-video" (a round
connector with pins in it) is also video only and thus also requires
the audio cables. You should connect either composite OR s-video, not
both, plus the red and white audio cables.

yellow cable is composite video

a lower quality alternative to S-video

go with the S

The yellow in this case is more likely to be composite, not S-video. If it's
got the same kind of connector as the audio cables, it's composite. S-video
is more of a computer-like connector (multiple small pins).
