hi,
I just installed Asus' silent square on my 3000+ s939. The old cpu temperatures were 42C most of the times and now they are around 40C, a meagre difference of only 2C? My cpu is still operating at stock speed

what could be the problem?

just a question, did you review the product before you purchased it ?

i would suggest comparing your results to those of other listed ones. If your temperatures are significatnly higher, then try re-installing it.

i came across a review by xbit labs here
and an overclocked cpu idled at 29C!! I realize that some up down in the mercury is ok but 40C and 29C just don't match.
and this HSF was NOT cheap. Infact it costed me $50

you have to take test results with a grain of salt man. Most of the time they dont tell you that they are testing their cooler in a climate contolled room with an ambient temperature of 65 degs F. smoke and mirrors my friend! and for shits and giggles, ive never read a postitive review of any asus hsf to date.

Just a lil curious about a few things.

What's your room temp?

How good is your case air flow?

How are the load temps compared to the stock?

hmm yeah you're right.. i were actually looking for a Tuniq Tower 120 or a Thermalright Ultra 120 but couldn't find either. every store however had Zalman 9700LED in stock so i opted for this one..thanks anyways....

my room temperature would surely be less than 20C. The case airflow would be fine. I am using a front panel fan and two back panels (120mm each)...

load temperatures: with stock ~55 as compared to ~45ish now

At least its taking off 10C on load. So, its at least absorbing as much heat as as possible.

Basically the same thing happened to me, with my Zalman 7700 vs my intel stock for my P4. It shaved off 10C off the load temp, though my intel hit 60-65C, depending on room temps.

Also keep in mind that your MB may not have the same method in determining the temp readings you see on your system. There is, to my understanding, no standard. So you can get different temp readings for same the CPU on different MB's.

I had a 3000+ on AM2 running on stock cooling and it idled at 19-21 degrees even w/o C'N'Q activated.

When i OC at 2400 Mhz it idled at 24 so your temps are kind of high.

I guess your case doesn't have a good air flow......

You cannot compare CPU revision, or heat probe on motherboard. since normal human body heat is 37C, I don't see the problem with 42C. fact is, before the A64 Winchester core, they were pretty usual low temp for CPU.

Your AM2 3000+ is a better core than the one before that is better than the one before and so on.

So, unless the load temp goes over 65C, I wouldn't care.. My friend Athlon TBird ran at 67 idle for almost 1 year due to a clogged heat sink, and it is still running.

Heheh.... Agreed. My old Thunderbird still runs today, though I worked on some air flow through the case. Idle temps on that 47-51C, Loads 55-57C.

My Thunderbird does have problems running over 60C temps though. Had a corrupted linux install when I noticed the temp was at or above 60C.

So your friends pretty lucky its a solid/stable CPU at 67C.
