Recently the local Costco wired up a big component cable splitter to
hook up all their HDTVs to the same HD signal. It is amazing to see
how bad some models are when every single screen are showing the
identical image. Some models were blurry, some have serious
convergence problems. It is hard to tell which one is bad because of
inferior circuitry and which one is just misaligned.

Blurry/convergence problems sounds to me like a lot of them were just not
calibrated correctly. They could probably be easily fixed by the user.

LOL, yeah, you could probably re-engineer the power supply without too
much problem too.

If the mfg can't bother to do the job right why should I buy it ?

Yep... a lot of stores just pull them out of the box and plug them in. I
tried that with my Samsung when I got it (it was a virgin still in the
shipping crate) and the pincushion effect on the raster was horrible.
Had to find a copy of the manual, make notes and set it up so that
pictures actually looked sane on it. It was especially bad with pillar-
boxed 16:9 as the TV is 4:3 and you got to see all four sides bowed
towards the screen center! Now it's 100% rectangular.

You figure a set that has been out on the floor a while has whatever the
mfg had as default settings? ;-)

Agree. I was happy with my SONY just out of the box. I did no
calibration except to use the one-touch focusing button on the front
of the TV. It would be a chore for non-techies to calibrate a TV.
Isn't TV supposed to be a turn-key system since decades ago? If I
want to buy a professional studio monitor, I would be paying a
different price and hire a full time technician to keep it in perfect
tuning. I expect it differently from a home TV.

What did you expect at a Costco store? If you want to compare televisions go
to a store where they have some real technicians. These are called
boutiques. You won't see blurry or convergence problems in a boutique.
