Question, The cost of buying two or four older processors and mobo appears roughly the same as the base level C2D or C2Q with single socket mobo, respectively, but what would the performance benefit be if any, of a workstation/server platform over a single socket setup? I would like to get the quickest performance converting large and numerous numbers of image and video files.

The biggest problem with using multiples of older generation CPUs is power consumption. A second problem is that usually multisocket systems have worse latency issues than single-socket, let alone single-die, multicores.
