I am looking to upgrade my computer. I do this every 7, 8, or 9 years. I want to have a RAID setup on my computer this time 'round. But not just one RAID setup, I want 2 RAIDs setup.
I was thinking about getting this motherboard P5B Deluxe 775 Express http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131045. Utilizing the onboard raid with 4 320 segate 7200.10s on the Intel Matrix RAID. I want a 20-30GB partition on the front of the harddrive to be RAID0. This is were I want my OS (i know, it's bad for data saftey, keep reading) The rest of the space I want as RAID 10 and used for software installs, my documents, etc.
I want to get a PCI Express RAID card, 3ware 9650SE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6816116043. Utilizing this hardware raid5 or raid6 with 8 320 segate 7200.10s. Setup into 3 partitions. The first partition of ~10GB with the purpose of SWAP file and a bootable OS, in case i need to restore the system. And split up the rest of the space equally, about 1TB each for stoarge of video/music/editing.
The OS on the RAID0 will be backed up onto the RAID5 weekly or bi-monthly. So if the RAID0 does fail, I can boot from the 10GB RAID5 partition and restore from the most recent backup.
Future plans for this computer is for Video editing, in full Hi Definition. And play games in full Hi Definition. And to watch archived shows in Hi Definition.
beginning of 2001, i bought an Iwill KA266-R motherboard with a duron 1ghz cpu. it has 256mb ddr266 ram, radeon 8500dv video card, 40gb harddrive, and win 98se. since then i made some modifications like bigger case, additional harddrives on black friday when there are really cheap. so now it has a silent cpu fan, 6 harddrives of varying sizes that add up to 700gb (~80% full), and bigger case to handle all the harddrives and 120mm fans, and winxp pro. so right now the computer is 6 years old, but it needs an overhaul rather than another "patch". It's running my 1080p 42" monitor, so the hi def is really choppy coming from the computer. And just incase someone doesn't know, 1080p means 1920x1080 pixels in videocard terms.
Might be complicated to set up, but it should definitely be feasible. Make sure to have good airflow over the hard drives, as that many drives will put out a LOT of heat.
Don't tell me your still using the Duron and 256mb of ram.... 8O
Sadly, yes the duron lives and is fed by the simple 256mb....i know i know.
Yes the setup of the two raids will be challenging, but i'm hoping the performance gained from RAID0 <-> RAID5 and RAID10 <-> RAID5 and having the swap file on a fast RAID5 will increase overall system performance. expensive now, but should last 5+ years.
I can't complain too much about the Duron....because currently my desktop is an Athlon 700.....yeah.....(my Athlon XP crapped out on me a few weeks ago; I plan to buy an X2 3800+ for my *free* motherboard I received a few days ago)
