Circuit City has a Panasonic 37" plasma EDTV model TH-37PD25U on sale for
$2250. Does anyone have any pros or cons on this model? It seems like an
exceptionally good deal but like all good deals, maybe their is a reason why
it's inexpensive. The picture looked darn good in the store. The sales person
suggested switched between an HD signal and a regular TV signal and when on the
TV signal the ED plasmas seemed to look better than the HD plasmas. There were
about 5 each of HD and ED plasmas on the wall for comparison. So the question
is, is this deal really as good as it appears? My space is very limited and I
might need to mount this TV on the wall so CRTs and such are not an option. My
viewing will be approximately 30% HD 20% DVD 50% regular signal. Also my signal
will be Comcast digital.

Just to complicate things I visited my local B&M yesterday and they had the 37"
Sony KE-37XS910 HD plasma that I had been lusting after for $3500, down from
$4500 a month ago. That puts it in my budget (albeit at the high end of it),
though I am not sure if it's worth the extra $1250. One reason being while I
have being doing my homework I heard such bad things about the quality of Sony
products these days. Any thoughts about the Sony/Panasonic comparison? Many
thanks,

Nick

Sony has a lot higher resolution, so picture quality will be sharper, and it
has a little bit better color engine for improved color accuracy. However,
if you don't mind the lower resolution of the Panasonic, it's a hell of a
deal. It has an ATSC tuner for local high def channels, an SD photo card for
picture displays, and a CableCard slot for HD cable. Great value.

There has been a significant round of price drops on the plasmas in
the past few weeks. Panasonic apparently drop the MSRP on the ED plasmas
by $800 and the HDs models by $500. I have noticed price drops on the
Pioneer, Sony, and other brands as well. Appears to be due to increased
production, a softening in demand, competition from the RPTVs, the fall
football season (in the US), and prepping the market for new models
coming out in the fall.

The ED Panasonics are considered among the best of the ED plasmas with
the best black levels and contrast available. I was in BB with a 10% off
coupon recently and was tempted by the Pan TH-37PD25 at $2250 myself
which is around a $1K drop from just a month or two ago. Panasonic also
has a 37" HD model, the TH-37PX25U, but I have only seen it at on-line
dealers and not at BB, CC, or other B&M stores yet. The reasoning for
the 37" ED was that it would serve as an interim TV to use for a few
years while waiting for the prices and technology to improve on the
bigger HD plasmas and LCDs. Then use it as a 2nd TV or hand it off to
someone else in the family. A thin smaller TV like that can be put into
a lot of places.

The Sony XS910 37" HD model is considered a good plasma, but the
reason for big price drop is because Sony is coming out with the new
XS955 models with ATSC tuners. See the sonystyle website.

You have to make the call on whether switching to HD 720x1024 or
1024x1024 is worth the extra $ depending on how you plan to use the TV.
I have thought about getting the Panny 37" HD which has gotten close to
$3K at the discount mail order places. But I am probably going to wait
until the next generation Panasonic TH-xxPXS30 (or PX30) models come out
- which may be in October or November or later.

Hope I was some help.

Alan

I've got the 37" Sony Plasma and it is unbelievably good. To see it at $3500
makes me mad, that is an awesome price for this TV

Thanks for the help guys. I finally decided on the 37" Sony 37XS910
plasma for $3500. The B&M (local store, been dealing with them for 20
years, staight shooters) had one left at that price plus the demo. I
am takeing the new in the box one of course. The newer 2005 Sony 37"
models coming in would be $4800ish (list price $5000)and as far as
they were concerned there would be no difference in the picture
quality at all, though they would be more than to happy to take a
deposit on the 2005 one if I insisted as the profit would be greater.

Good choice, you will not be disappointed. Go with the DVI interface if you
can
