I bought my first PPC, Garmin Que M5, a couple of weeks ago and must say I
love it.
I bought it primarily for the built in GPS function but have found the PPC
side of it to be great.

While I didn't think about it when I bought the unit, I believe internet
access would be a major advantage when traveling.
Now my question, I have two options for internet access, Bluetooth via my
cell phone,( I'd have to replace my cell phone) or buy a Wifi SD card. My
question for those who have used WiFi, are there a sufficient number of hot
spots out there that I could make a connection?
Any recommendations as to which way I should go?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Well, WiFi access isa somewhat dependent on where you are and where you go.
So happens this was posted in the wireless group
http://www.intel.com/personal/wire [...] /index.htm If you dig
around you can find a way to search your own area to see what options you
might have. Do keep in mind that whether you have a cell phone or go WiFi
for access, you are likely to incur some expense. You need a data plan on
the cell phone, and Free WiFi is out there, but highly dependent on your
locale. Cell access is of course much slower than WiFi, but also available
wherever you have cell coverage.

A question for you to clarify 'while traveling', is whether you mean access
while moving from point to point, or access when you stop for the night.

That depends on just what kind of internet access you want.

If you want to view the same web pages you do on a regular computer, I
suggest a cheap laptop. The screen on non-vga PocketPC's is an example of
pure frustration when trying to view a web page meant for normal computer
screens.

There are services that just send you the simple stuff, news, weather, that
sort of thing. If that's your bag, and you have plenty of money to spend, a
cell phone that allows you to access the internet would do well. On the
other hand, a cell phone capable of that would most likely also be capable
of checking the news and weather by itself, making the process of fiddling
with connections to a PDA somewhat redundant.

You ask if there are a sufficient number of hot spots "out there."
Unfortunately, that's a tough one to answer. If "out there" is, say, the
city of Seattle or Los Angeles, then yes, there are loads of hot spots. If
"out there" is Snakeshit Kentucky, then the answer is sadly no.

There are hot spots at many major airports, however, as they are currently
working on ways of charging people for breathing, you'll have to pay to use
them.

I suggest that before you invest in new cell phones or whatnot, you take
your PPC to a Starbucks or somewhere with an open, public hot spot, and try
it out. If it's something you think you really want when traveling, then
it's time to look at your options.

I never leave home without my PDA, but when I travel, especially when I'm on
a detail, I use my laptop for internet access. I have a full size keyboard,
a full size screen, wi-fi, modem, network connector, and all the other
essentials I may need.
