Been watching TV shows on a pocketPC for years now, and really TIVO is
offering nothing outside of brand recognition. It is merely recorded shows
that are re-encoded for easier playing on a handheld device.

Lots of ways to do it, but IMHO the easiest for a turnkey solution is here:

Been doing this for months now.

(TiVo -> TivoNET card -> PC -> TyTool -> TMPGEnc -> PPC -> Betaplayer)

Takes about 15 minutes to transfer an hour-long show, and about an hour
to encode. I'm playing catch-up with SG1 at the moment which is on five
times a week on Sky One (UK). Store a week's worth on the TiVo, set a
batch encoding job on the PC overnight Friday, transfer them to SD card
over the weekend and watch them in work (during tea breaks, obviously)
during the following week.

not to mention, with snapstream, you can "stream" live tv to your PPC from
around the house (if Wifi is an option) and/or stream live TV and your
recorded programs from any pc with internet access.

Definitely. Despite having a nice interface on the big screen and a remote
keyboard, I probably use the TV PC more as a streaming server than a living
room player. Even then a few shows get copied over to laptops or PPC for
trips, etc.

It really is much more flexible than a stand alone system (unhacked TIVO,
Cable's PVR, etc.)
