This TV has become popular for people trying to squeeze an HDTV into
their existing entertainment center because the Panasonic is somehow only
27" wide. But it is in the 4:3 format, so ... my question is:
When watching HD material, there will be black bands on top and below,
right? And this will create a 16:9 picture equivalent to a 19-23" TV, right?
And this will happen even with ESPN HD and NBC in HD?
Thanks if anyone knows. I'd also like to hear from owners of this set to
see if they like it.

ESPN HD is mostly 4:3 content with fancy bars on the sides to make it 16:9.
So if you can set the panasonic to crop the sides off ESPN HD, you will get
a full screen picture and lose nothing important. ESPN HD is pretty lame
for a HD channel. But yeah, it sounds like you know what you are doing.

A 27" 4:3 TV, when viewing 16:9 programs, has the same viewing areas as a
24.78" 16:9 TV.

You might consider the 26" 16x9 models from Philips or Samsung. The Samsung
model includes the HDTV tuner.

I can't talk about the Panasonic specifically, but my Samsung is about
the same. So the size of the viewing area is about the same as that of a
24.8 inch 16:9 TV.
sqrt((27*{3/5}*{3/4})^2+(27*{4/5})^2)
And yes, it will happen with all 16:9 content, including anamorphic
DVD's. Your TV probably has a remote switch for the two aspect ratios,
so you can set your DVD player to wide-screen format.
