I have a PIII 1 Ghz with 512 mb memory. I use XP Pro and am connected to the internet with a cable modem.

When my NIC (Realtek 8139) is in my computer, it needs 3 minutes 20 seconds to boot.

When I remove the NIC it needs 1 minute 5 seconds to boot.

I have very little technical background and would appreciate if someone could help understand what I should do to make my computer start faster.

are you connected to a domain? if so, you have to config the xp clients to use the servers dns settings.

Too much agreement is like too many fat guys in a hottub; it's still relaxing, but you end up with some nasty broth.

Your NIC is probably timing out trying to connect to your cable modem before WinXPPro is fully loaded. The time out might last a minute or so, in which case can cause the problem. I always recommend to set your NIC to 100Mbit Full Duplex to get rid of any possible negotiation problems or slow connections.

Try a different NIC to see if the problem keeps happening.
