Does anyone have any experience with this player? Model number
DVDHD931. I am getting a new HDTV and wonder if this DVD player is
good as the marketing makes it out to be. List price is $299, but I
have not shopped around to see what they are going for at the stores.
Below is a snipit from the Samsung web site.

"The 720p/1080i DVD Players greatly enhance video performance by
increasing the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles and
up-converting them to HDTV compliant formats. A normal DVD player
outputs 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive Scan DVD players can
roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p video. the HD
players enable you to enjoy an HDTV compliant picture-roughly twice
the resolution of progressive scan DVD players. It is not High
Definition DVD, so it is not a new format and works with existing
discs."

I bought a hd tuner/dvd player which upconverts all my dvds and gives me
an extra digital tuner. It is an LG Brand from Best Buy for 399.00 .
It does an excellent job of upconverting all my dvds to near hd
quality. I love it and have started watching my dvds again. Since
buying a 57 "hd Toshiba widescreen tv, I haven't enjoyed standard dvds
much. This new hd receiver/dvd player has brought back the joy in my
dvds and is well worth the money to me. I have no experience with the
Samsung dvd player you are talking about. Sorry.

This player gets TERRIBLE reviews. Check out WWW.AVSFORUM.COM They have a review of the LG player and tuner combo as well.

Really? I love - just love - watching DVDs on my 55" Mits Diamond series
HDTV. I have a progressive scan DVD player - AV Industries X-100 (they seem
to be out of business now - glad I haven't had any trouble with the player,
knock on wood) - and my Widescreen Enhanced DVDs look absolutely stunning in
480p mode. I'm told that many of the movies shown on the HD movies channels
are simply HD up-converts from the DVD. I can believe it. Check out "The
Fifth Element". Corny movie, but incredibly beautiful. High bitrate encoding
brings exceptions clarity. It's my "benchmark" DVD.
Now... here's my question:
I'm considering buying a Momitsu V880 from a friend. It upconverts to 1080i
on the Component outs (most players - like the Samsung - only upconvert out
the DVI). If the difference is as great as you say (and, unlike you, I
already *love* my DVDs in 480p), then I should be ecstatic once I get a
chance to see this thing in action upconverting to 1080i - which I'll do if
my friend ever finds the remote to the thing so I can try it out :-(
Does anyone else have any (albeit subjective) experience with upconverting
DVD players? I'd be interested in hearing your views (pun intended).

I have this player and I like it alot. However, the dvi hookup to my
mits 65313 slightly improves the picture from component, not greatly as
the adverstisement would suggest, unfortunately, this was the main
reason I bought it. Remote is cheesy. I've heard some of the newer dvi
dvd players look better. just my 2 cents.

I have experience with both. The Samsung has far better quality yhan the
LG. That is why I always buy separate components. I am waiting fot the
Samsung DVD-HD941.
The LG has too many digital artifacts that should have been erradicated on
all DVD players years ago. The Samsung has excellent sound. I could not
use the Samsung because I would have to keep unpluing and plugin the DVI
cable back in. It is no compaticble with my set, a JVC 34WP..? The only
JVC 34" HDTV! I am waith for that Panasonic DVD-S97S. This seems to be a
mystery deck. The Toshiba seems to be officially out now.
