Worth waiting? 3-6 months, what new hardware?

Forum Systems : Homebuilt Worth waiting? 3-6 months, what new hardware?

The GeForce 8 is out, the Core 2 is a badass chip, and all that. Today is not a bad time to build.

However, I am in no hurry, and the earliest I would be building would be this summer maybe, possible closer to the end of the year if I can hold out.

In the next 3-6 months, what new hardware is expected to come out? I have heard people talking about some new Intel chips and chipsets to update the Core 2. How long will it be until there would be any real change in the GeForce 8 line? Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Let's see... If my memory serves...

E600, 8600 series, and Intel's Bearlake (featuring a 3ghz C2D at a very nice price point...) are the three big ones I can think of offhand.

Lots of new stuff coming out. If you're into Intel only, then there are a couple new chips coming out, but nothing I know of the at will be that much better than what's out now. AMD is supposed to have a bunch of cpus coming out, Agena, Barcelona, an Kuma in a variety of speed ratings and cores.

On the video card side, the R600 should be out in the next few months and that will stir up the pot a lot. If nothing else, Nvidia will be forced to come out with some new hardware and/or lower some prices.

It all depends on how much of a hurry you're in and whether or not you want specific companies making the hardware or you're after what's best no matter who makes it.

I'm going to wait until fall to upgrade. The new stuff will be hear and the top of the line stuff now will be dirt cheap then (quad core for 266 8O ). My pc will be nearly 3 yrs old by then and when I built it, it was alread 1 1/2 behind. So I will probably shoot myself when playing games though. I hope nothing too cool comes out until I get my new box cuz I would hate to play them in slide show mode.

barcelona won't be released until q3 and even then it's only going to be to oem's for server, we probably won't see it until November for us enthusiast type who know building is better then buying.

Good info, thanks!

So new stuff yes, but nothing earth-shattering.

At least if I wait a bit, the prices will fall more and more.

Just noticed you're from Reno, NV. I'm in Dayton, about an hour away, at least when I'm not off in a sailboat. Don't you just wish there was a real computer store, like Fry's or something, in town?
