Does anyone know if tests have been done to determine if gray sidebars
cause less or no uneven wear in crt tubes? I've heard they are better.

They are better, only in that they are less of a CONTRAST from the
regular video. There for the wear will not be as drastic in that it
will wear more closely to the normal wear.
Understand if you turn on a picture of any type, whether it be video
or just a plain white screen, you ARE wearing you tubes.
Higher than necessary contrast settings are not good, nor are static
images such as "gray or black bars".
Gray bars are better, but not good.
