On more than one machine, I've had an upgrade to Windows 2000 Server fail
about 3/4 through "Registers components" in the "final tasks" portion. It
gives the message "Fatal error: setup has encountered an error while trying
to upgrade this domain controller." The machine then reboots, goes through
setup again, and fails at the same point again. How can I get around this?

This sounds HORRIBLE! I don't know why it would happen, certainly not
one I've come across. I assume you must have a lot of DCs to mess around
with otherwise you'd have lost everything by now?

If you've got at least two DCs converted, is it not possible to just
install Win2k fresh on remaining boxes, then force replication?

One thing I know "now", but didn't know "then" is that a clean install
is about 100 times better than an NT4 upgrade...

I took an identical twin of the server in question and played around with
upgrading it, and everything went smoothly. Through process of elimination,
I've narrowed it down to two things: registry corruption, or video drivers.
Either way, problem solved and I'm good to go.
