Hi there-
Looking for some ideas to help with a small network AD upgrade.
I've got an old (1998?) server running NT4 SP6a. I just got a new box which
I want to be the 'first-among-equals' in my new AD domain.
I had thought initially to slide NT4 on the new box, make it PDC, and then
upgrade it to 2k3, then upgrade my other servers in place. However, I hadn't
planned on not having drivers and hardware appropriate for NT4 when I specced
out the purchase. As such, it would be, well, a major pain to get NT4 on the
new box in the first place.
Given that, I wondered about upgrade-in-place my current PDC (old though it
may be), then adding my fresh new-configured box to the domain. However, I
want the new box to be primary...and that won't get me there.
Can I 'remove' the old server from my domain, and have all the 'primary'
roles roll over to my main server (Global catalog, Operations Master, etc),
or do I need to run a tool to get those in place once I pull my old box off
the network? What, specifically, should I do to 'remove' the old box? What
should I do to ensure that my services roll appropriately into other
machines?
Or is there a different way I should do this?
Looking for a bit of advice from folks who might know -
thanks
taj
