First, the machine specs.

Sempron 2800+, no OC.
Asus K8V-E Deluxe with a Marvell chip. (I thought it had a marvell chip, but it currently says Nvidia.)
Gskill 512MBs ram
2 HDDs, one of which is a recent 120GB drive.
1 Liteon DVD burner.
Windows 2000 /SP4. Fully patched, but probably missing Decs.

The problem is this. It can't ping anything in dos. It can't surf any webpage with IE. (can't try firefox, its not on this machine.) Programs such as adware/AVG can't update. Strangly, it can't ping or navagate to the router. (Dlink 604) At first I was thinking that it had a broken NIC, but oddly it can browse the other machines on the network. The Dlink also claims the wire between it and the machine is good. If it can surf other machines, then the NIC is still good right? It is the onboard nic from the motherboard. (NF3ultra if my memory serves.) No conflicts listed in the device manager. I have some old NICs I can throw in there, but I'm wondering if there is something else wrong.

Update. Found FF on the machine, it couldn't do anything either. While in the dos prompt I tried to ping the router again, and it failed. I laughed however when it could ping the other computers on the network. In case anyone was wondering...

node type broadcast
IP routing enabled no
Wins proxy enabled no

Description nForce networking controller
Physical address 00-11-D8-69-4C-20
DHCP enabled Yes
Auto config enabled Yes
IP address 192.168.0.104
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
DHCP server 192.168.0.1
DNS server 192.168.0.1
Netbios over TCPIP Disabled

Question, how can it not ping the router, but obtain a IP address? (Ipconfig /release /renew works just fine.)

You may have respond to ping turned off in router.

Check your firewall and make sure it doesn't have you locked out.

The router is set to discard ping from WAN, not LAN. I already checked with another computer on the network, it can ping the router.

You may need to reset your tcp stack. It's rare but is dose happen. MS has instructions on their site.

You may have a modified host file, blocking you too. Hoster.exe is a good program to look and modified it with.

I would suggest a bad port, but then it wouldn't grab a IP addess at all.

Check to see if MS did a update, if so roll it back (restore). There have been reports of 1 updated that caused problems but that was 7 mo ago. It only pretaines to nievda video and Kempski AV. What happen is that it put a service in a not approved for access list that these 2 program used. Only applies to MS firewall.

try this from the run cmd "netsh winsock reset"
