This device has a capture limitation of 720x480p, but this would be
the desired resolution for DVD burning anyway. I'm wondering if anyone
has tried this device (or similar devices) with any luck. My desire is
to find a device that would accept the signal (component out from my
HD cable box) and gracefully downgrade it to 720x480p.than transfer it
via IEEE 1394/FireWire to my PC.

It does not state that anywhere in the description that it will work
with HD video. Technicly as I understand it the Hollywood-mandated
copy protection may not allow that card to record HD content.

Have you looked at the ATI TV Wonder Pro
http://www.ati.com/products/tvwonderpro/index.html ? This is a PC add-in
card that comes with an adapter cable that allows you to connect it to your
HDTV receiver via S-Video and I believe even component. This may be a nice
solution because your directly capturing your video to your hard drive at
720x480 MPEG-2. Then you simply burn your DVDs!

It does not record HD it records SD.
And the ATI HDTV Wonder card only records OTA HD not Component, DVI
or Cable HD so your options are limited.

You will NOT find any device that will take "un-compressed" analog HDTV from
your component outputs and download it to your computer. A real time mpeg2
encoder that will handle HDTV is in the 50-100,000 dollars cost right now.
Someday it may be possible to load un-compressed HDTV into your computer but
it will be years before this is easy.
If you can get access to the mgpeg2 HDTV data stream from a firewire (IEEE
1394) from your cable box then there are ways to convert this into Windows
Media 9 codec that can store 1-2 hours of HDTV content on a DVDR disk. You
can also downconvert the HDTV mpeg2 datastream to standard DVD format.

Actually, there are PCI cards that do this for around $2000.

Do you have more info on a real time mpeg2 HDTV encoder PCI card for $2000.
Thanks

Yes, I do.
Not the answer you wanted? Sorry, but Google will solve this for you, since
