For 2k in USD$ you can get a top of the line system. Where to put the punch depends on what you want to do on the system. You can look at the thread called Sanji's build guild. And come back wit some ideas and more info.

What I would get:

Core 2 Duo e4300 $170
Tuniq Tower CPU Cooler: $50
4gb 2kits of patriot ddr800 cl4 ram: 2x $165
eVGA 8800GTS 640mb GPU $550
Coolermaster Stacker 830/ Lian Li / TT Armor / Silverstone TJ09: :250
evga 680i mobo: $250
320gb seagate: : $90
Seasonic S12 650w PSU: $160
Sound Card (XFi or OxyHD based): $100
Any dvd burner: $30
WinXP: $90

TOTAL: $2080 sorry for the overrun

It really depends what you want. This rig focuses on Gaming power and a strong OC. Some will want to focus on storage or some like me on Quiet:
e.g. P180, Noctua, Arctic Cooling, Zalman VF900 ;)

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that, i'll probably just use this one for gaming. Use my old one for everything else.

What type of games? What do you look for in the looks of a system? You can spend or save on the case with the goodies.

For $2000, I'd definitely make sure the rig includes an 8800GTX rather than a GTS. Scrap the extra 2Gigs of ram if you need to as you won't need it in WinXP. Vista may be different.

My recommendation:

Thermaltake Soprano DX
$115.99
-of course everyone has different opinions on what case is appropriate for them

Corsair 620HX
$149.99 after $20.00 Mail-In Rebate
-plenty of power, and can supposedly run 2x 8800gtx, but I would stick with one videocard with this PSU

Asus P5N32-E SLI
$239.99

Intel Core2Duo E4300
$169.00
-If your not overclocking, the E6600 would be the better choice

Tuniq Tower 120
$64.99

Corsair XMS2 2048-6400C4
$181.00 after $50.00 Mail-In Rebate

eVGA 8800GTX
$539.99 after $30.00 Mail-In Rebate

Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
$79.99

2x Seagate 7200.10 320GB
$179.98

LG DVD Burner
$28.99

Windows Vista Home Premium OEM
$119.99
OR
Windows XP Pro SP2 OEM
$139.99

Total: $1890.00 w/ Windows XP
Total: $1870.00 w/ Windows Vista
