I have just purchased the Sony 50 LCD Projection KF50WE620 and am now
looking at what DVD player I want to get and I'm a little conflicted:
I love Sony products and I've enver had a bad experience with ANYTHING Sony,
but I first got looking at the Samsung HD DVD player, but then read that
there are sometimes problems with dark scenes in movies. And now I'm
looking at a Toshiba DVD Redorder that has a built in hard drive (80 gig)
and I'm thinking I'd like this as my Tivo has doed YET AGAIN. Just
wondering if anyone on here is familiar with the product and whether it can
be used like a Tivo without a subscription. Or if there are any other
suggestions-I'd love to hear from real people as opposed to some of the
shills and flamers that are on some message boards. Thanks.
Dan

Sorry Dan but Samsung does not have a HD DVD player out at this time. They
do have one that has a DVI output, but this does not mean HD.

The dark problems in some scenes is going to be a problem regardless of the
dvd player - it's part of the technology you bought (LCD rear projection)
It's not that huge of an issue for most, though, and you may not even notice
it.

I probably shouldn't have called it true HD DVD-it's just that I see the
models of the DVD players start with HD (as in HD 931). And I originally
thought I'd use the DVI from the DVD player, but I keep hearing that it's
better to use the DVI out of the digital cable and use component from the
DVD. And as much as I'd like to buy Sony, or even Samsung 2nd, I am
seriously looking at the Toshiba with the 80 gig hard drive in it-just
because I need something Tivo-like, but can't stand the problems I have with
Tivos dying on me.
