Win2k setup.exe crashes

Hello,

Am trying to fix a broken win2k install. Setup.exe gets
only so far; in the 'saving start menu' section, gives up
with the message that setup.exe encountered errors and
will close; system reboots, goes back into setup.exe and
the whole process repeats. It says it's generating an
error log. How would I access it, if I automatically go
back to setup again?

I've tried various safe modes, but it always tries to
complete the incomplete setup.

I'm OK with doing a fresh install; but have some files I'd
like to pull off first before doing a format. If someone
can tell me how I can get at these files from setup or
another way, that would be great.
