In Q3 of course....

Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 2.00 GHz - $113
http://www.dailytech.com/Article.aspx?newsid=6484#cmt118404
nVidia 8600 GT 600MHz core / 1.4GHz memory - $149
http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4723
GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 - $90 (today's price with assumed 10% drop)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128017
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 DDR2 800 - $112 (today minus assumed 25%)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145590
Some air CPU cooler - ~$40

So, Under $500 will get you a C2D rig you can OC to near 3.0 GHz with DX10, with 2 gigs of memory? Who would have believed that a year ago?

Perhaps if you live in the States. But you are forgetting the case, operating system, sound card, optical drives, hard drive, and power supply if you wanted to build a new system.

Ordering from Newegg is often a lot cheaper than a good online site in Canada. And I don't think things are cheap in the UK.

GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=19870&vpn=GA-965P-S3&manufacture=Gigabyte

$100US = $118CDN on NewEgg, $157CDN on NCIX (33% more in Canada)

P.S. How you you decide on a 25% drop in RAM prices?

I saw an article talking about 30% drops in RAM prices this year, I figured 25% or so should happen by this mysterious "Q3" timeframe.

I also assume NO price drops in the video card that comes out in a month, and only a 10% drop in the motherboard which will have a lot of competition with the 650i ultras, as well as all the bearlake boards and such coming out.

As for all the other parts, they would all be recycled from my current system. Apparently, the 8600 GT doesn't require PCI-E power (or whatever the technical term is), so many people might not need to upgrade their power supplies, and I might be one of them....will know for sure when they come out and we know power requirements for sure.

just curios where did yo read about the Ram price cuts that very improbable considering alot of people will be buying new rigs around Q3-Q4 so the ram manufacturers will no doubtebly take advantage of that and maybe raise price not lower them

Some of the reports I've read about the 8600 cards suggests that they won't be very solid performers, so I'm skeptical about how good they'll be for gaming. Better to toss down another $100 and make it a $600 build with an 8800GTS 320.

Thank you for the link just one problem thats a crap article and doesn`t really give a reason why ram prices would drop (although i wish that so much too like the rest of you) it even contradicts itself saying that some firms says prices have droped almost 30% but that even he`s only seen no changes if not rises in prices ,you know its really incredible i mean are ram chips that hard to make??how come in a branch where there are more individual manufacturer actually has the biggest prices in the industry? its like with the 8800gts 320 i mean they just halfed the ram in two and cut 100$ what the heck so that means the ram of the gts is worth aroudn 180-200$ and the rest of the gpu/marketing/revenue/transport etc is only worth about 200$ you know kind of thinking of it and reading about prices cuts and people flaming over amd/intel prices its amazing no one has been flaming about ram prices when there more then 10 individual manufacturers and still no drop in prices if you ask me theres some ram catel or something that protects thery interest

Yes, Q3; I'. mot sure if even a crystal ball would satisfy your questions about Q3. You're almost getting there but who knows the exact prices (your $113 :D ), who knows if at the time you won't have K10 dual cores that OCed @ 3.0G will smoke a 3.0G Core2 like Core2 did with the K8?! Who knows, with the drops, maybe everybody will be after quads rather than dual cores, and then, $500 to $650 won't matter that much.
There's so little time until Q3 but many things to happen
