I am going from an eight year old P1 with Win95 to a new
Celeron system. Also going from a 6G Western Digital to a
40G Western Digital drive.
I do not want to lose all the setups and configurations
that I have done over the years when I upgrade to Win2k.
I tried to use both Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools
2.8 and Ghost (Symantec) to create a mirror of my old
drive to the new drive. It successfully makes the copy,
but when I try to boot from the new drive I get the
message that I have a Windows Protection Error while
trying to initialize device IOSYS. And I cannot continue
to load the system.
I did an install of Win2k Pro to the new drive. The
install process did not acknowledge the existing Win95
installation. It instead asked for a CD from a prior
installation of Windows to prove that I was eligable for
an upgrade. I put in my Win95 cd and the install program
told me that it could not read the cd. So I put in a
Win98 cd and it accepted it and continued.
However, it did not upgrade the Win95 installation in my
\windows directory, but created a new Win2k installation
in \winnt directory. Then when I boot up, I am given a
choice between Win2k Pro or Win95 to load.
Consequently, because of the IOSYS problem, I cannot load
Win95 and the programs that used to run just fine in Win95
do not run in Win2k. (my guess is registry or path
problems.)
So, what do I do? How can I get my applications from the
old system to run on the new system without having to
reinstall and reconfigue every one? How can I get Win2k
to just upgrade my Win95 operating system? Any ideas will
be gratefully accepted. You can write me at
