Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win2000.setup_upgrade (More info?)
We have a workstation which was updated to Windows 20000
Pro from Windows 95.
The System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) was originally used
on the Windows 95
machine to severely restrict the end-users from making any
changes.
(Including the restriction from using regedit).
We used a Microsoft article called "Protecting Users From
Themselves"
as a guideline for enabling the Win 95 restrictions.
When the Win 95 system was directly-upgraded to Windows
2000
the restricted policy settings were apparently preserved
from Win 95-to-Win 2000.
Now we need to use the registry editor to remove spyware
from the system.
Unfortunately the registry editor is seen as a restricted
application by Windows 2000.
Apparently, Windows 2000's Group Policy editor (which
runs) does not appear to
recognize the current registry state or allow us to
successfully reset or correct
the restricted/security settings on the registry.
Any suggestions to correct this problem would be greatly
appreciated.
