ok heres the deal... i just got a gig of ram advertised at pc3200 speeds, and i have left another 256mb stick in the slot running at pc2700. should i loose the old stick and run at higher speeds or should i keep both in for 1.25 gigs? my mainboard is a kt4v on a kt400 chipset.

If you keep all the sticks in, they will all default to the lowest rated speed i.e. 2700.
Forget the 256Mb of PC2700, and run your 1Gb at 3200 :D

If you are running Windows, keep the extra RAM for 1.25GB. Although it won't be a big speed improvement, any RAM is so much faster than virtual (hard drive) memory that more RAM is almost always better than faster RAM.

I agree with Mondoman in this case, and especially since you don't need to worry about dual channel. For this system, more memory is gooder 8)

+1 Windows will use the memory increase more then the speed increase.

However, you might want to benchmark a game or something and see what you like.
