I just got my HD Cable Box today and have noticed that, on the HD
channels, -even on the preview one-that I see these annoying white specks
wherever there are dark colors. It looks like interference the way TV used
to look with an antenna-although obviously much clearer and not near the
extent-just similar to that. Is this a common problem? Could it be from an
inferior cable signal/inferior cable that I'm using? I'm with Rogers Cable
in Toronto and the retards at the help desk are clueless and
disinterested-not an easy combinaion to deal with

It's hard to tell what your problem is without knowing what your specks
look like.

Is it a sort of shimmering? Does it tend to be in more or less vertical
stripes in the same places? Does it show up on every digital channel,
or just a few? My first ATSC tuner had some bad video RAM which caused
a shimmering effect (when the RAM wasn't fast enough for the DAC), and
after a day or two, I finally realized that was what it was and got it
exchanged.

Did the symptom occur only after replacement of the CATV box with the HD
unit?? If the cable is directly connected to the display via the RF are the
artifacts present? (yes I do realize you will not get HD this way). If the
artifacts are present only via the CATV Box via Composite or DVI input you
may need to try another device via the same source to see if it is being
developed within the display specifically or is indeed is from the new CATV
Box. A bit of your specific diagnostic and testing may resolve the problem
to either the display or CATV Box. Good Luck with Rogers, Gov!!

I had the exact same problem with my SA3100HD box. It needed three
replacements to solve the problem. The Time-Warner people that came
over had no idea what the problem was. It finally took a supervisor
who had a recall notice for the boxes to get the problem fixed. I
still have a copy of the recall notice. If you want a copy email me:

Thanks for the replies. The specks are always visible (since changing from
the digital box to the HD digital box) on the darker areas and are often in
a vertical, tiny stripe. I've got the Rogers weasels coming out to switch
the cable that is used as the specks are only a minor problem compared to
the picture and sound dropping out constantly on ALL digital channels-like
tonight watching Six Feet Under-screen went black over 20 times (I lost
count around 15) and my Audio receiver was flipping out because of the
signal coming and going. I was ready to call ExpressVu-because I was
getting so pissed off.
SO far, the actual TV has been a great experience, but the cable-as expected
from Rogers-a major disappointment.

Yeah, it sounds like you have a bad box. That box has RAM problems.
That's why I asked if there were vertical stripes of speckling, because
that's what bad video RAM does to a picture. I'm sure your video and
audio dropouts are related to it too.
