There used to be a 'loophole' to XP Pro funktionality in XP Home. In XP Pro, you can switch off the file sharing "for-dummies-mode" (clear the "Use simple file sharing" checkbox in folder options). That option isn't available in XP Home.
According to various sources, you used to be able get non-dummy filesharing in the Home Edition by setting HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\ForceGuest to 0. I just tried it on a new XP Home installation, but it doesn't work. Has MS removed that loophole recently?
Microsoft has made a whole toolkit available for shared use XP Home computers. Maybe they changed the registry key at the same time; I haven't messed with it in quite awhile.
Look here for information and download instructions.
No, the reg key is still there, and it's the one that is changed by XP Pro when you uncheck the checkbox for dummy-mode file sharing.
The shared use toolkit is not for file sharing, it's for computer sharing. The reason I want do switch off 'file sharing for dummies' is that I want to be able to share files from an XP Home computer, but only to those who have a password.
