R/S stops counting game time at 999.59 hours

Just came across something interesting - my husband has over 1000 hours into
pokemon Sapphire and the game duration stopped incrementing at 999 hours 59
minutes. Can't believe he has put that much time into it but then he has
fallen asleep with the game running on many, many occasions.

I thought my play time was bad at 320 hours.
