Hello, I have been running win2000 server on a clone PC. Yesterday I just
installed win2003 server EE, creating a dual boot. The install was difficult
and I finally had to disable all cache and shadowing features within my bios
to complete the install. The disables seemed to make the system run slower
but at least I could continue with install. Finally I was able to complete
install and login as administrator. After login I had no deskop icons, no
taskbar, no start button.
I can only alt ctl del to get task manager then click file > new task > open
so that I can run things like cmd, iexplore, regedit, desk.cpl, compmgmt.msc
etc. It will run IE but not explorer. I've used desk.cpl to modify my
desktop to no avail. From compmgt.msc, I can get to device manager. In device
manager I can see the display adapter - NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 (Microsoft
Corporation) looks ok. However I do have a yellow question mark on Other
Devices. When I open Other Devices, I see 2 more yellow question marks on
Multimedia Audio Controller and PCI Simple Communications Controller. I
don't thinkd this has anything to do with the problem because I see the same
things on my old win2000 server but it does not cause any problems.
I'm just trying to get up a basic win2003 sever so I can get familiar with
the OS. I don't care about audio or fancy video etc. I will install SQL
Server and get familiar with the .NET framework etc.
I can continue to boot to my old windows 2000, however I need to reset bios
cache parameters to get any performance.
I have a K7T266 Pro2-A mother board with AMD 1666 mhz processor and 512mb of
RAM. Previously I had 64mb ram on with the win2000 but I upgraded to 512 mb
before in preparation for win 2003. When the system boots is still shows 64
mb even though it seems to recognize all 512 in both win2000 and win2003.
