I recently upgraded from 98 to 98se. I am now trying to upgrade to 2000.
The initial set-up runs ok until the first re-start. When the machine comes
back on it just sits there idle and does not continue to set up. Any reasons?

If your 2000 gives you the option to clean install, i would recomend
that, at this stage it may be nessasery to load the recovary console
and backup important stuff.

first, you should clean out 98 before you upgrade to win2k. upgrade by boot
up from win2k CD rom.

Better yet, have the Windows 2000 installer format the hard drive then do
a clean install of Windows 2000 - you'd be much happier in the long run :)
