FWIW: Who is going to justify the outrageous prices for theses lamps only to
shelf it until needed, especially seeing the possibilities of the lamp
ballast (Power Supply) also cause failures?

And, in the smaller sizes, direct view CRT. Proven technology is always
a bit easier to maintain.

In many ways, this is really a bad idea. Others have pointed out that
it will make them even more scarce, but the real problem is that the
bulb warranty starts at the time of purchase. Basically, this means that
the "spare" bulb could blow *as you insert it* and you will be out at
least $200 and *still* have the "bulb shortage" issue to deal with.

I recommend that anyone buying a spare use it for at least 90 days to be
sure that it is good, but it only makes sense to do so after the warranty on
the original lamp is up. In other words, take advantage of the warranty
period on every lamp.
