A local dealer here got on the phone with his Sony distributor this morning
and asked for the difference in these two new Sony models, other than the
$400 higher price for the 955. Answer:

1. brighter bulb
2. better LSI chip
3. styling

My understanding is that they are both new models; the XS955 is
supposed to be available Oct.22, the WF655 Oct. 29. The only tech
difference I can find is that the "DRC Palette" (which only works on
SD) allows more user adjustments on the XS. The XS is basically
silver, the WF has a dark gray frame around the picture. You can see
good pictures and data on www.crutchfield.com.

I have found out a bit more since I originally posted this question. The
local Sony distributer here said that the difference is a brighter picture
(but it uses the same lamp as the other models and this year's models), a
"better LSI chip" and styling. Apparently, based on the picture on the
Sony dealer website, the 955 has the glass or plastic sheet overlaying the
screen, like the XBR models do.

The following from MarketNewsMagazine.ca:

"The XS models are targeted to videophiles, with enhancements like a new
live color circuit that emphasizes blues and greens without affecting reds,
which is said to result in a more natural and vivid picture. In addition,
these models provide increased picture-setting flexibility through the
Advanced Video Menu functions, that allow users to compensate for varying
sources (like VCR, cable, and DVD) or fine-tune the gamma correction, white
balance, detail enhancement and clear white adjustments traditionally
available only through service menus. They also feature improved audio via
dual midrange/tweeter drivers per channel, plus a subwoofer."

My local dealer seems to think, based on his sources that, the new models
are going to be getting into the stores starting this week. I notice that a
couple of web-sellers claim to have them in stock now. I hope that right,
that I don't have to wait until after the 22nd, since I have a 955 on order.
