Why is there not an 'optical video transmission standard'??

Within the last one or two years, the DVI digital video transmission
standard was established. Just this year, HDMI has evolved as the latest
digital video transmission protocol. This however, is still an electrical
standard and has distance limitations.

The optical (Toslink)digital audio transmission protocol has been around for
at least 20 years and to the best of my knowledge, has almost no distance
limitations. I remember that my first laserdisc player had a optical toslink
output for sound when I purchased it in the early 80's.

Why is it that no optical VIDEO transmission method has yet to be
developed.?? All of the latest DVD players and high definition televisions
are all now boasting that they now include the latest 'HDMI' digital
interface, but this is still an electrical interface!!! Am I missing
something??

This HDMI interface still has a very short distance limitation!!. (Less than
12 feet??) Other than a pure digital video interface from source to display,
I don't see that much of an improvement.

Is an optical digital video interface in the works???

There are in fact optical DVI and HDMI media converters. Many makes and
models, do a search for DVI fiber extension. You can run DVI/HDMI for over
a thousand feet with them. There is even a CAT5 converter that lets you run
DVI/HDMI over CAT5 for 150'. That is pretty cool and is far enough for most
of us.
