There is a known issue with word repeating letters like this when typing into a text box. It's caused from installed a hot fix, but I'm not sure if that would effect Office on Linux?
Update Office with the latest fixes and see if that will resolve your problem.
I'm not familiar with how Word stores information on Linux, but if this is a blank document that is doin this, search for normal.dot and rename it to normal.old - open word, try typing it in again, it should go away if it's not a program problem.
