Simply crazy. How will AMD make money? AMD has to go into prostitution, and do more of those Charlie "fondling" a processors "behind doors".

The (stock speed) 6000+ might actually be a better deal than the E6600 for almost two weeks with that price list...

Actually that pricing might just be aggressive enough to make me think hard about ditching the C2D I was about to build and get a stopgap 3800+ to wait for Kuma/Agena.

If intel will go drop core 2 duo price as expected AMD do not have other choice .Soon we will get X2 @ 40$ (and this is really funny)
March 24, 2007 1:25:39 PM

oh wow, shoulda bought a 4800+ now instead of back when they were $300

oh well
March 24, 2007 1:53:15 PM

I paid over 3 grand for a 486SX system with 4 megs of ram. I dont think I have to tell anyone here that's just the way it works.
March 24, 2007 1:53:57 PM

How are they gonna lower prices when they cant deliver processors?
Hardly anything of the price drop will arrive at the customer.
Theyre stuck in Dells jaws.

8O .... and what about the X2 4800+, only $129... I was looking for a X2 3600+ to upgrade the Sempron 2800+ in my GF's PC but the X2 4800+ looks like a much better deal with a lot more extra power, especially if it'd the 2.5GHz Brisbane.

Pricing their retail processors so low is going to make Dell think twice about the 80 bucks they pay for a 5200+.

Actually I am kinda pissed about all these price drops. Before long my chip will be at half the price I paid for it. The damn memory for my system has dropped like a rock too. It is down to $140. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad.

I feel your pain

What a predicament, thar 5200 for 169 would purr along real nice in my case, but i paid 200 bucks for my x2-4200 and its not a year old yet, i couldnt put it on ebay at this point cause i would take a huge hit. Im gonna have to see if some one i know needs a pc built, so i can get that 5200, im not usually a multiple upgrader, but i think this would tide me over until my x4 2300. I guess i could get another am2 board, amd make my 4200 my backup system, givbe my current backup system to my daughter, and her system to my son, but i would have 2 am2 boards, when soon i will need a am2+ board. This is so streeeful, im gonna go get some beer.

Good point man. I was so fixated on the now more reasonably priced 6000+ and the dirt cheap 3800+ (which seemed a much better deal than the 3600+) that I ignored the great deals in the midrange   . The 4800+ should be good enough to last well into next year and give the K10 pricing time to stabilize before I would need to upgrade if I go the AMD route.

Crap! Now I have to go research socket AM2 boards. I had been looking only at LGA775 the last few months.

;)  Yeah, when Hector said 30% at all costs he was not kiddin... I don't think they can cut much more after this, otherwise they would be giving them away.... what are their single cores doing?Well, this either gives you some idea of the margins they were getting before the "price-war", or they are just breaking even, or losing money(doubtful) now.
March 24, 2007 3:55:03 PM

So it has now occurred to me I could build a new X2 6000+ system with only my tax return money if I wanted to.

Damn tuition.

Intel's price cuts better extend to the mobile CPUs or I'll be pissed. I want a T7200 to upgrade my lappy but I don't want to pay $300.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Intel giving big price-cuts in mobile. Are you a religious man?.... you may want to adjust your prayers a little. :D

Haha. Yeah, it doesn't seem likely that their current processors will get price cuts until Santa Rosa drops.

I might demand my parents let me replace their current 1.4Ghz Celeron system with a custom X2 3600+ system. Overclock it as far as it will go on stock volts...one or two GB of memory...my dad wouldn't know what hit him.
March 24, 2007 4:13:58 PM

WOW! 8O I love price wars! :p  I hope that there will be further Intel response to this AMD price cuts! I want a C2Q for $300. 8)
March 24, 2007 4:39:14 PM

Given these cuts I may end up putting an x2 65w proc in my HTPC instead of the E4300 I was planning on - just depends on how far Intel prices come down....since I have to buy a new mobo and ram anyway it will be a hard choice....
March 24, 2007 4:44:00 PM

I bought an Opteron 165 awhile back. I'm just curious, what would be a good chip to buy to replace this while the prices are low?

Looking for a decent performance boost. Maybe I should just keep what i have?

I currently have the Opteron overclocked to 2.53

Thanks!

Keep what you have. Socket 939 is not part of the AMD deal-a-thon.
You could consider a 486SX for only 3 grand though...

  Actually, I think it's still boxed up in my step-dad's attic. I'll give you a little off. Slightly used and all.
March 24, 2007 5:23:54 PM

$238 for an X2 6000+ is amazing, considering it beats the E6600 in most (stock clock speed) benchmarks.
March 24, 2007 5:34:00 PM

Maaaaaan... that's L-O-W...

For only $400 you can have a decent gaming rig.
$15 case
Cheap $75 X2 proc
$63 Biostar mobo
$60 1GB of RAM
$100 7600GT
$43 HD
$30 DVD-Burner
$20-40 PSU

$426

Not bad at all. The X1950XT is just barely out of the $500 price range with a build like that too. It will be an excellent time to buy a cheap computer :D .

Personally I'd spend more on the RAM and PSU, :p

E6600 will be cheaper within weeks and runs a lot cooler (80W in this graph) too.

Amen to that my perverted brother..

With these price cuts myOpty 144 can finally be replaced, and dirt cheap at that.

However. I was more inline with something like:

6000+
7950GT, maybe even 8600GTS if it arrives fast enough
maybe 2GB pc6400 ram
and a sluty Abit 590 mainboard..

drool i say....

Well, we shouldn't try and kid ourselves too much. It's pretty plain to see that an X2 3600+ OCed until Kuma / Agena arrive would be a far, far better option. Put the extra money into a better mobo / video card / 2GB DDR2-800...stuff like that.

You are a little off, with the exception of synthetic memory bandwidth, and perhaps cinebench (FPU benches favoring AMD's strength in the FPU) .... the E6600 either meets or beats the 6000+ (mostly beats, especially in encoding and gaming).

I bet you will rush to buy it if it goes $500 :D  . It's what I am waiting for at the end of the year; a QFX motherboard and a Barcelona Opteron just to start off 8)

Come on a 15 dollar case, dude you have to have a decent case even for a mid range system.

Is this price drop info published anywhere else? I remember reading an article on xtreview.com that referred to the underside of a Core 2 Duo cpu as "the abdomen" ... I'm pretty sure it's a joke site.

Hot damn, i had i brain storm, Im gonna get the 5200 x2, pull my x2 4200 and keep it in a box, and put it up. Im gonna keep my backup system until the am2+ boards come out, replace my socket 754 board with my am2 board, use the am+ board with the 5200 x2 until the x4 cpu's hit that magic 250-300 dollar mark. I rock.
