Greetings,

Can anyone please help me point in the right direction to solve my problem?

I need to backup one laptop's data and apps to external USB drive, and use that USB drive to bootup with on another laptop. Are there any shareware to make this possible easily? I am trying to exchange laptops but do not want to give up all the apps and data on the old laptop!

Thank you,
Dave

I don't think you are going to be able to do it without installing the apps on the new laptop. The data, of course, is easily transferred. The problem is with registering the apps within the registry of the new system. Most apps (i.e. MS Office) won't run by just copying over the app files. You can get all of the registry entries and transfer those over too, but that could be a long and tedious process even if you knew every key.

You could clone the drive using partition magic or Norton ghost. Not sure about free apps, but they are both available on P2P networks.
Make sure your laptop supports booting from a usb drive.

BTW WD has an app thet fits on a floppie that will do the same thing if the drive you are upgrading to is WD. Good luck.
