fragmentation questions

I've been keeping an eye on my HD lately, watching for fragmentation, because I found out a week ago taht i'd let my defrag'ing go WAY to un-noticed.

Anyway, saw something yesterday that really perplexed me.

I've got a 120 gig drive, it's 39% free. I had it totally defrag'd, then i downloaded a file. Was about 9.5 megs. With a fully defrag'd 120 gig drive, that left a LOT of free space, and lots of spaces big enough for that file.

But rather than putting it into a spot big enough for it, it fragmented the file, 72 times, and placed it randomly around my hard drive.

Surely this is NOT the most efficient way to organize files. Naturally a defrag fixed the problem, but i must ask, why is my computer being this messy?

Thanks.
