I moved into a new apartment at school 2 months ago, and have been having this recurring problem. The room where the wireless router is located is a few rooms down from mine, and without an ethernet connection in the wall, I had to go the wireless route to use my PC.
I purchased a Linksys Wireless-G USB deal, as it seemed to be the most convenient device to use. It set up fine and all, but it has been having problems with maintaining a connection. I'm only down the hall (maybe 30, 40 feet?) from the wireless router, and my USB struggles with even picking up a good signal. Signal strength is almost always low, and its not like I'm in prison with the world's thickest concrete walls.
So when the signal drops, the little bubble pops up that I lost my connection, etc. When I right-click and 'Repair' it, my internet then also almost always comes back up right away. It goes through the disabling, enabling, etc. and then I'm back in business for the next 5, 13, 36 minutes, or however long it decides to stay up.
Some devices are more sensitive than others. If its on a coax, try positioning it up higher. Change the antenna to a higher beam antenna may help to. Or return it for a AP. Most AP supports Clent mode, these connect through the nic port. It's possiable that the signal is being blocked by a an appliance or other item.

Sorry to sound dumb here, but whats an AP?
Also, does it make a difference if I'm using Windows Wireless Configuration or the Linksys Wireless Deal?
AP = Access Point which is the wireless part of a router or client endpoint.
As far as front end control software. Sometimes the mfg gives you more options, but not always. But you can not have both on tring yo control the card, they will fight each other. I use MS zero config.
