I'm considering getting rid of my $140 Comcast bill and buying an OTA
HD receiver.... all the local stations broadcast from exactly 7 miles
(as the crow flies) from my home. Is this typically 'good enough'
How about in the basement - would I need an outdoor antenna? Thank
you for the help!

My stations are 35 miles or so away. I tried a pair of rabbit ears, and got
a couple of stations intermittently. I now have a $50 roof antenna and get
every station fine. You would probably be fine depending on ur terrain,
etc. If you do need an outdoor antenna it'd be worth it anyways. I'd go to
satellite. I got sat installed for free, then paid $150 and got an HD sat
receiver which is also an OTA HD converter. Not a bad deal.

What market do you live in???

Keep in mind, some networks are transmitting in full power, some are in
low power.

17 miles from NYC I get ABC, FOX, CBS, but NO NBC.

http://www.antennaweb.org is a good reference site but doesn't tell you
who's in low power. With a good roof antenna setup and rotor, I get less
that half the channels that antennaweb says I should.

I'm in central NJ, about 30 miles from NY and 50 miles from Philly. I
have the Watchung mountains a bit in the way of NY however. I get CBS,
FOX, and ABC out of NY and CBS, NBC, ABC, WB, and UPN out of Philly,
in addition to a number of PBS stations. I also occasionally get NBC out
of NY and FOX out of Philly but only when condisions happen to be perfect.

I'm using a Radio Shack 120" combination antenna (as I needed analog VHF
channels as well), with a Channel Master Titon 7777 mast mount amp.

Free TV is alive and well :) (depending where you are anyway). This has
been my first exposure to HD NFL games....unreal!!

In the basement, having 'metal' siding, nearby tall buildings

in line of sight to the Towers can be a 'weak signal' problem..

For indoors, 1st floor try a Zenith Silver Sensor UHF indoor
antenna..

Are all your HD stations UHF??? Go to http://www.antennaweb.org

and enter your 9 digit ZIP Code... Select Digital channels option

for frequency(UHF or VHF), direction, & distance...

Another very good $25 UHF outdoor antenna is a ChannelMaster 3021

4 bay bow tie which can hang inside from a plant hook in

a closet Or attic....

Asides from the other good advice you got here from others, try this
link and find out what others in your area are doing/experiencing:

http://www.hdtvpub.com/

Somebody here a while ago had a link to a site that had more details
on all the transmitters, including their strength, but I can't find
that url anymore.
FWIW, I am about 10 miles from the towers in my area and have great
reception in the basement with an RCA ANT1250 amplified indoor antenna
($ 60). I also heard great things about the Silver Sensor.
http://www.zenith.com/sub_prod/pro [...] =49&id=131

And I also heard to steer clear of terk antennas. But that's just
hearsay

Only 7 miles - and you're worried about a problem?

I get the San Diego stations here in Los Angeles, just north of Santa Monica,
usually without any problems at all - and that's over 100 miles. [The only SD
station I don't get consistently is KUSI(18D/51A), but they're LP - only 30kW.]
