Good speakers are generally over $40.00.

Add another 2 orders of magnitude there my little numerically challenged buddy.

"Good speakers" start at about 4K. "Great speakers" start at around 30K, and go right out to 250K+.

If you mean "incredibly loud, distorted, ultra bassy, poor soundstaging" then yeah - $40 will get you there.

If you're looking for "acceptable" as opposed to "good" then start looking at the top end of the Creative and Logitech systems. They'll blow your socks off, but they still suck donkey testicles compared to genuine HiFi speakers.

err... lets be realistic no one buys $4000 speakers for their pc  .

yeah my comment was meant to be sarcastic as if i paid over 4000 for speakers they would be worth more than my pc
ah heck that
only audiophiles need $4000 worth of speakers

Mobius, I think the rest of us are talking about consumer level speakers, not I-just-won-the-lottery level speakers. For a 2.1 computer speaker setup $40 is still low, a good set of 2.1 comp speakers will run around $100-$150 for something like this:

It may not work for the uber-audiophiles, but for everyone else it's enough.

I have these:

and an X-fi extremegamer and they serve me perfectly well.

yeah... when sound quality starts to really matter, you begin to deviate from standard computer speakers (and the manufacturers that make them)... and start looking elsewhere (not for all in one sets), but sets you can assemble from different components (much like a DIY computer)

I think you do not need a 7.1 sound card when your MB is 5.1 ready. Although with either of these setup's listening position is the key, and makes all the difference.

i recently built a new rig and I purchased the BOSE companion 3 system and they rock..and they look pretty good doing it. I know BOSE taked a beating on these forums but this est at 250 while i figure maybe 50$ over priced sounds great. Music slams ans I can hear footsteps ans discern them diectionally in bf2142 that is a benchmark that may nly matter to me but you have to pick what u like.

Enjoy

This is silly... Rule of thumb is to always spend more on your speakers than on your electronics! Sound characteristics from speakers determine the quality of your sound so long as your choise in electronics is sound. (no pun)

Eg:
Pair of Ascend 170's $340
Pioneer Reciever $150
Optical output from moterhboad, or ~$150 Soundcard that outputs DTS, DD, or PL...

Where does most of the quality come from? Take a guess...

Also, I have a pair if Insignia 6.5" speakers that sound better than any PC speaker setup by a long shot. They where only $50 when I got them...

like i said, i have limited space. I have an office with 3 computer desk their is only room for a 2.1 setup and why would you buy 5.1 speakers and use them on an embedded motherboard soundcard :?:. I chose the logitech because they are supposed to be the best pc 2.1 system, not because of the price.

Yea i saw those at the store, but i think i am going to stick with the logitech. Now to decide on audio cards, Should i buy an x-Fi xtrememusic(heard its better than an extreme gamer) since i am only going to be using 2.1? I can get one for about $50.

The internals are the same so what really matters is features and software bundle. Personally I'd say grab whichever is cheaper since the sound should be the same.
