Okay here is the story

Im gonna be upgrading my graphics from my current x1950 pro to a dx10 card in the next few months, however iv decided to have a look at some of the psu's from now just to get a head start on things.

Now, what i want to know is which of the following would best suit my needs keeping in mind that I will never be going crossfire/sli in the next few years.

My current set up (and expected changes) are:

c2d E6600 @stock (may possibly o/c a tad bit, nothing major)
2gigs of DDR400 ram (will change it to ddr2 667 or 800 to help with the o/c)
250 gb seagate hdd (no change planned, however I may add an extra 80gb)
sapphire x1950 pro AGP (will change it to a dx10 card, possibly 8800 gts/gtx or an ati alternative depending on price/performance)
Thermaltake wingo V8000A case with 5 fans (2x80mm, 3x90mm, wont be changing this)

soooo.....i was looking through the whole psu reference list and all the other posts, but am still not sure what would be the ideal psu to use. Im not willing to spend £100 on one (if it includes delivery then yeah i can go that far), so id say about £80 is the right sorta range.

I'v personally come up with the following list in no particular order:

1- Antec NeoHE 550W
2- Corsair CMPSU 520W
3- Corsair CMPSU 620W
4- Hiper Type-R 580W
5- Hiper Type-M 730W
6- OCZ GamerXstream 600W
7- Seasonic S12 600W
8- Silverstone Zeus 650W
9- Tagan U25 600W
10- Thermaltake toughpower 700/750W
11- Zalman ZM600-HP 600W

see what i mean by too many choices.. 8O 8O

can somone here tell me which one or more of those can support my future rig....if any!??? Im gonna wait till the R600 cards are out to find out the final power requirements of those cards.

I just want a psu that will last me 2-3 years without any issues and still give me some headway for future upgrades if required.

thanx for your help....if you decide to help :P

modular sounds good as it will help reduce the clutter in my case  though its not that vital

what about the Hiper Type-M 730W, that has 56 amps.

Seems to me you forgot about the THERMALTAKE TOUGHPOWER line of psu.Get at least a 700watt with 4 12v rails,4 @ 18amps .Plus you get the added protection of over voltage as well as over current and short circuit protection.Add to that high quality components and a 5 yr.warranty, and you got one hell of a good thing going.Goodluck.PS.Maybe even get the 850 and have 2 of the 12v rails @ 30amps and 2 @ 18amps.

okay i think i can narrow it down a bit more now

1- hiper 730W (56amp)
2- corsair 620W (50amp)
3- thermaltake toughpower 700W (56amp)
4- OCZ GamerXstream 600W (48.33amp)

does the 8800 also have the 8pin connector??

yeah i know what u mean and i know for sure my arctic cooler will bump into it. which is why i should have said the hiper M series, cause if im not mistaken they are not modular and have the cables in the back (or front, whatever you wanna call it) right??

any way, iv decided to go for the thermaltake toughpower for now, but probably wont buy till im sure i dont want the r600 cards (damn those 8 pin sockets!) :P

Well nothing is confirmed about what connectors the R600 will use. I've seen reports of it using a single 8. Others say 2 6 pin. I've even seen where it says it take one of each.

which is why im gonna wait. At least its good to know what i will be looking for when the time comes.

thanx for the help btw.

JonnyGuru says his ATI sources (tech sheet?) say one 8 pin and one 6 pin. So the psu will need three 6 pins minimum with use of adaptor (or the new 8 pin pci-e). If this is true, and only 4 psu's currently have the new 8 pin, we will need around 850watter. As these seem to be the only other option with more than two 6 pin leads.

So how many R600s are they expecting to sell  Personally, I would have to refinance my house

Good advice. I've been holding off on purchasing a new psu to go with my 1950pro because I was only planning to keep the card for about a year. Thought I might as well get a uber psu now, so I didn't have to worry about it when it came time for the upgrade. Now I think I'll buy a decent corsair 520/620 for now and the prices will drop soon enough that I won't be too much out of pocket. Oh, thanks mpilchfamily for maintaining the lists and making our lives easier. Much appreciated.
