My system is as follows:
AMD T-bird 700
Asus A7V
ELSA GLADIAC GeForce2 GTS (Elsa Drivers v5.09.00.312)
ViewSonic 17PS-2 Monitor (PnP)
..thats more or less the important information

I jsut reinstalled Win2k for the 4-5 time on this system for one reason or another, but on this latest install for some reason the Device Manager does not show a monitor icon hence no ViewSonic 17PS monitor. Since this system is alive 24/7 I want to shut the monitor off after 1 hr of inactivity. This setting is usually under Display Adapter settings, however when i set it to the desired conditions, it will not shut the monitor off since Win2k don't really think that there is a monitor. So, how would i go about adding the monitor Icon to the Device Manager? I have tried to add new hardware, but that don't seem to work. Any Suggestions?

thx OrIoN

Usually unknown device could be made known to Win2000 by installing the product's w2k drivers. Go to the manufacturer's site and download the necessary files.

I can (and have) d/l the latest Drivers from ViewSonic's Website, However their driver installs are not EXE based (ie they require to select "Update Driver" under the monitor in Device Manager). As a result of having no monitor shown (even under Unknown Devices)I can not use the proper Drivers. Thats is why I want to "Add a Monitor" but i have not been able to find this option anywhere (even under the Adapter settings).

My next attempt will be to use a different PnP monitor and force it to attempt a new detection and hope that works...but if anyone has suggestions they are appreciated

Hmmm... have you tried going to Control Panel > Add/Remove Hardware? It should let you choose the unknown device and let's you update driver.

Oh yes, there is a shorter way. It should be under the Unknown Device's tab. Double click it and... it should be somewhere. Play around. Ask me again if there's any probs.

I have tried to Add/Remove Hardware and the PnP scan for new hardware does not find the monitor. And if you want to install new hardware (non PnP) Monitors is not one of the hardware types that can be selected.

As for the monitor showing up under Unknown devices....It does not show up there...so I can't update drivers via that method.

I have tried most of the obvious ways....I was hoping for a not so obvious one.

Hi, I had this prob orginally when I installed Win2K but I found that when I loaded the graphics drivers the monitor then appeared in the devices. Can you select the monitor through your graphics driver utility?
