What do you guys think it's better? Choose myself the size of the page files or let Windows handle it??
I read that you can set the size of your page files to the maximium of your memory size plus 50%... I have 512 Mb of memory, so it would be 768 Mb of page files... This is set the default when my Windows is installed... But when I let Windows handle my page files, it set to 523 Mb...

What option should I use? :D

The absolute best way to handle this is to have a second hard drive "D". After you partition and format it in Disk Management, you put your pagefile on it first thing - setting it at 768mb (fixed) yourself. Then you knock down the swap file on your "C" drive to 2mb.

This seriously cuts down fragmentation.

But I can't (and do want to xD) format my PC again and can't also make 2 partitions, since I'm not the only user of this PC...
And even using the PC normally, it doesn't get too much fragmented...

I want to make the best configuration for 1 HD...

I have always used a fixed page file (max & min) size (1.5 x RAM) - and had no problems.

I said nothing about formatting your pc. Just ADDING a second hd for the BEST scenario for a pagefile.

Fine, if that's something you're not comfortable with.

Just heed the moderator's advice (and mine) - set a "fixed" swapfile. Some very strong words of caution. BEFORE YOU RESET THE SWAPFILE, defrag twice.

You mean... Defrag once, and just after it defrag once again and then reset the page files?

Reply to Spielwurfel

So that the "fixed" pagefile spreads over a contiguous empty block.

But then, defrag just once instead of twice make any difference??

I didn't understand...
