Hay TG i just recently installed fresh copy of my windows xp sp2 and it was running great untill the Windows Partion of my hard drive started loseing free space!!!!! (allso i have Norton anti-virus 2002 installed and zone alarm pro v6)
let me explain...........
its a 25gig (called drive C: partition on a 250gb hard drive that allso has to other partitions D: which is another 25gig partition for another windows And F: which is a 200gb partition for my data
anyway the problem with drive is it that lately its started losing free space not from installing stuff or modifiying windows page file and recyle bin useage and all that but actuley loseing Free Space
after installing all the drivers and windows xp and a game free space was around 6.50gb then its been loseing space from that point!!!! its now down to 5.00gb!!!!!! HELP!!!! ARRRRG ARRRRG
and if theres no way of fixing it ill consider formating but at last resort!
page file uses some, system restore uses some. all the log files, prefetch files and other crap that windows does will use up free space. It should level out. Now if it keeps going down then your have problems.
I would say a virus or a bad spyware program is duplicating itself. But since you said it was a clean install Ill rule that out, for now.
Get rid of the 2002 Norton. It's buggy, and I don't think they support it anymore.
Also get yourself behind a hardware firewall router. That way, you can get away without an A/V for awhile until you fix things. You can install Avast when you settle things down.
Go to these three places and delete everything XP will let you. Don't worry; they are all temps left behind.
Then start Chkdsk - right-click My Computer - Explore - right-click the "C" drive - Properties - Tools - Error Checking. Check off the two boxes, and reboot. This utility will run. 25g drive should take 15-20 minutes.
When you get your desktop back, check your space now.
Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. Check to see if you have some apps on "C". Perhaps you can remove them, and reinstall on "D".
Go to your System Properties tool, hit the System Restore tab, and make sure that it's turned off. Otherwise Windows may be taking up your hard drive space by making restore points for you.
