Display settings not kept, why?

Hi there,

Can someone list some of the reasons WinXP sp2 wouldn't keep its Display settings, please? I set the Display settings to 1024x768, but then when I turn the pc on next morning it goes back to the highest settings (which is too much as the text is not legible). Every morning is the same thing

Any ideas/tips/advice will be greately apreciated.

All you posters have to give us all possible pertinent info.

Did you click "Apply" and then Ok?
Did you set Refresh at all?
Did you set up the monitor?

What is your video system?
Graphics card or hardwired? What one?
What chipset? ATI, nVidia ????

Did you install separate drivers for any of this after the XP installation?

Sorry for the lack of info
What happens is that this pc is not mine, it's an old Compaq my friend got just to do email, web surfing, and ripping CDs to MP3s.
I believe the CPU is a PIII 1Ghz, but I can't recall the model of this compaq.
I will try to get that info over the next few days.

I did click on both, "Apply" and then Ok.
What do you mean exactly by setting up the monitor?
The video card is hardly worth mentioning, whatever came with that model, I'll have to look into that too.
But you know what? I am so glad you mentioned "drivers" ; ) Because I didn't even go to Device Manager to check for possible problems. Most likely it's just a matter of installing the graphics drivers.

yeah im useing a friends comp that does similar things

like it starts at the lowest colour and bitrate then when i apply higher settings it just reverts back ?!?!?! Help !!!!

80gb hdd
direct x 9 of some kind not sure if its a b or c
Ati Raedon 9200 256mb agp 8x with Catalist 6.2`s *With No Controll Panel for some reason?!?!?!?!??!!!? it dident install when i but the catalist drivers on!
and a CTX 17"crt monitor*a new model

Some monitors come with drivers too.

You need to nail down the graphics system; both card and monitor. If they are Compaq proprietary, you can get drivers from various sources:
