Hi,
My dad just purchased a 53" Panasonic HDTV, but he didn't get the HD
receiver in hopes of going with a DirecTV receiver. After checking
with DirecTV, the few HD channels they offer aren't worth the cost to
pay for the receiver plus $10.99/month.
So... we're researching HD receivers for his TV. Basically he still
wants to run his standard DirecTV box (I know, not HDTV) plus get HDTV
local channels. Are all HD receivers basically the same or what
should we look for? I'm not sure what exact model he got, but I bet
it's one of the higher-end units since he never buys low/cheap. Do we
need to go with a Panasonic HD receiver?
Thanks for any suggestions, and sorry if this is a very elementary
question. I know the HD technology and how it works, but this is my
first venture into HD equipment.

I would recommend that he go ahead and get the HD package from DTV. If
I'm not mistaken they have the receiver for $99. This gives you the
capability for Over The Air as well as sattelite. I like my DTV HD
receiver and they are adding HD channels all the time with a bunch more
in the future (just launched or are sked to launch 3 or 4 new
sattelites.
It is possible to receive OTA HD from several locations, you will need
and good antenna and a rotor.

I thought the deal was still running, but perhaps no. First 6 months of HD was
free, then back to the 10.99 price for the remaining 6 months. ESPN is the
primary reason to get it - it's still mostly blank air with regards to HD, but
they're are running a lot of football games now. BravoHD for tennis, then a lot
of arts stuff. Discovery is all over the maps. HDnet runs some old shows I liked,
occasionally puts on a movie of interest.
With a DVR the HD package is well worth it. Without, I'd agree that it may be
too steep.

It may be, but I'm quite certain I got it on directv, seeing as I don't subscribe
to the other one.
