Hey there
Im just curious about the power of my system and if i should over clock it, upgrade parts and so on.
im running on :
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 939
Asus Silent Square cooler
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe 939
XFX 8800GTS 350MB 500Mhz
OCZ Gold XTC PC4000 EL 2Gb 3-4-3-8
OCZ GameXstream 700w PSU
Seagate 111Gb
Western Digital Raptor 37Gb
Asus DVD RW
Sony DVD RW
is this system up to date and able to get through DirectX 10 games in the future?
or am i under power?
please give me advice on what needs to be done
Defiantly buddy. Your system is really good. Some people might consider socket 939 to be a bit out dated, but its still an awesome platform in my opinion. If you plan on upgrading I am positive you can get great deals on an Athlon X2 for your 939. Also, you should have no problem with Direct X 10 games... the 8800GTS is a great card and is a great deal for the money. I really see no need to upgrade any time soon unless you need a little extra hard drive space. Either way you should be really happy with your system, because I know I would be.
yeh i was thinking of going X2 but then will it make much of a improvment?
also i was thinking of goign Am2 but then some one on here told me about that AMD are gona have a new skt soon anyway
so im not gona worry about a x2 till the new skt comes out
Yeah if I was you I would wait for the new socket. Although you can't get 65nm Athlon X2s in skt 939 you can still get a great deal on a 90nm one. I think the upgrade would be worth it. Its a fact that programming is going the way of threading. I defiantly suggest getting an X2, there are just too many great deals on those CPUs right now.
That is your decision to make whether it performs quick enough for you.
But your PC has an important purpose... it is to make us E6600 owners feel better about running their rigs stable at 3.2GHz on air, from stock of 2.4GHz!!! Sweet!!!

haha I can attest to the awesomeness of the e6600... but the only reason the C2D exists is because AMD produced the A64 monster. Your 3700+ is an awesome piece of hardware, I used to have a 3500+ and I loved it.
I would personally NOT overclock. Chances are you may break something. I spent lots and lots of time overclocking AMD systems and got tired of always fixing what I broke. Didn't like soldering resistors to IC chips to increase voltage and the like. I opted to play games and enjoy it instead of always working on it. I'd just go for keeping your system stable and have fun with it. I don't think the extra few FPS are going to be worth it.
If you choose to overclock - welcome to the black arts!

I have to disagree. With that motherboard it is almost impossible to screw something up. The motherboard wont even corrupt the BIOS if you do something wrong. It will restart and go back to the best know configuration.
I have the same mobo as you and i used to have a 3500+. The switch to a 4400+ was great. If you are only gaming i would over clock that CPU.
Dont worry about breaking anything. the A64 chips will shut down if they get too hot too.
That is a great system! I would get another hard drive, and keep it like it is. That 3700+ is still one of the fastest single cores available. I wouldn't even bother with upgrading to X2 until it is completely needed! What is your 3DMark05 score?
Your setup though good could be a problem as more and more games are able to utilize a second core. We are now finally entering the era of multithreaded games.
To play future titles or even current stuff like Rainbow Six Vegas or Supreme Commander there are real benefits to having at least a dual core. Your choices on skt 939 are diminishing. I feel that AMD timed AM2 poorly. They abandoned a large installed user base forcing a platform change at a time when any logical platform change would lead to Core2; fanboys aside.
hey, the only questionable thing about your system is the processor, not because its slow but because its single core. Of course you have many options for upgrading. You could switch over to AM2, or wait for AM2+ or wait for AM3 (if you realllllly love AMD) or you could go with intel which has the best product right now.
Most games are going to be multi-threaded real soon so think about upgrading to mutli-core in the near future. In my opinion youd be fine to save yourself some cash and upgrade to the x2 4400+ or 4800+ and overclock them to 2.8ghz.... which would hold you over for the next 2 or 3 years maybe and then itll be time for another major upgrade.
With most games you PC will be well balanced, some new games like Flight Sim X are known to be CPU hogs and the CPU you have would cause performance issues, but other than that your system is just fine.
Iv been told my mother board is awesome for overclocking.
what speeds can i get out of my CPU?
yeah, your MotherBoard is very good for OverClocking.
if you do not wish to rise your CPU voltage much(V-Core) (Like Me ) you can easily hit 2.5~2.6GHz (Athlon64 FX55's Speed).
but you need to read more & more about OverClocking if you do not wish to damage your system.
