maybe a silly question but im really not sure. I'm running a pair of 8800gts in S L I with a aspire 680 watt is this enough or is it time to upgrade?

64X2 4400
A8N SLI Premium
2X 8800gts
X-Fi Platinum
4 Gigs OCZ platinum
APEVIA ATX-PFC680W-BL ATX12V / EPS12V 680W
WD 150 Raptor Vista Drive
WD 250 XP Drive
Dell 30" LCD

If you look at the amps you should get a new one. Even if you add it the wrong way, you don't reach the 52 amp minimum. That PSU has a 22 amp and a 24 amp +12v. When you add it the correct way, you end up getting fewer amps on the rails. The OCZ gameXstream 700w should be plenty for your system and it is a good quality PSU, highly recommend in the forums.

Id say 680W would be enough, but being apieva, Id say its not..... I second the Idea of the GameXStreme 700W.. I have the 600W.. and tight now the 700W is less, and its a pretty good PSU.. snatch it up at the great deal and MIR it has now!

Under powering a system bring a whole host of problems. You may experience lockups in games, Random shut downs and restarts, lagging, BSOD, and file corruption. Worst comes to worst and the PSU fails killing other system components with it. If you are forced to run with that PSU for a while then cut back to a single GTS so you’re not overloading the PSU.

Yeah, what he said..

While an OCZ PSU may be an upgrade from the Aspire 680 in use, I would personally look for a different brand of PSU than an OCZ gameXstream because of the ripple towards the top end.

It has been repeated a few times here and there, skimping on a PSU is a bad idea. Like mpilchfamily said, it brings a whole host of problems.

PC Power and Cooling 750 can be had dirrect from the company for $169 and if you ever need more power than that (and your case will hold 2 PSU's) you can add a 2nd one.

I use the Aspire 680w Beast PFC model and it boasts power to my 2 7900GTX's. I'm not sure on how that goes against 2 8800GTS's, but I thought I'd just share my experience with the Powersupply being talked about here. Its held up well for 9 months now, and I hope it lasts longer.

PC&Powercooling offer great Powersupplies like ZoldDude said. See if you can take advantage of what they have to offer.

Good luck :)

If you want to be future proof then you need to check the PSU list again and go with one of the units with the "*" next to it. These units have the new 8 pin PCI-e power connectors the future video cards will start needing.

Do you know off hand if the 8-pin cards you refer to can use a 6-pin connector with an adapter or must the PSU have the 8-pin connector built in?

BTW, thanks for the great info and always-informative posts.
