I have this series on DVD, but it's 1.33:1 ratio, whereas the TNT-HD
version is 16:9. I looked on Amazon, and a 16:9 DVD version is not
available. How was the original series on HBO shot, full frame, or
widescreen?

According to IDMB, it's 1.33:1. Few programs made for TV were shot
widescreen in 1998.

TNT-HD blows. It seems like most of the "HD" content is 4:3 all distorted
into a 16:9 version. They have very little true HD content.

I agree. TNT-HD (if you can call it HD) is the worst. And the 4:3 stretching and/or zooming to 16:9 is extremely annoying.

Glad it's not just me. I have not been able to understand how TNT calls
what they are doing "HD". I could do that by toggling my remote to "full"
on any SD channel!

The show on TNT was true HD. It was not stretched.

TNT HD only launched a few months ago, they upconvert and then crop
all their 4:3 content to fill out the 16:9 screen. A small percentage
of what they show is true HD. Most of the new movies they show. On TNT
HD I've seen the following movies in true HD: John Q, Primal Fear, The
Mothman Prophecies, Evil Kenevile (TNT Original).
ESPN HD did the same thing for the longest. Instead of increasing the
amount of HD content they show, ESPN decided to come up with their own
left/right sidebars. TNT HD may eventually be led to do the same, but
since TNT HD is owned by TimeWarner cable, it's doubtful (they refuse
to listen to customer feedback).

I repeat: From the Earth to the Moon was in TRUE HD on TNT, while the
DVD is full frame. I know the difference as I've been in this game
for more than 2 years.

But, it's not easy to know exactly what happened.
The series was almost certainly filmed on 35mm film. There is more than
enough resolution on 35mm film to allow TNT-HD to extract the center 16:9
area on an HD telecine. This would result in the DVD having more picture
even though the TNT-HD showing was "true HD".
Proof of this is how well "Hogan's Heroes" and "Charlie's Angels" look on
HDNet. Those shows are 30-40 years old but are stunning as HD. HDNet
doesn't go to the extreme of grabbing the middle 16:9, but instead chop
off what was the "safe area" (for overscan of TV sets of *that* time) at
top and bottom, which leaves very slight sideboxing, for an aspect ratio
of about 15:9.

Sorry, I don't care how long you've been in the game. I own both the region 1 and region 2 DVD sets. Region 1 is 4:3, region 2 is a spurious, zoomed kludge of a 16:9 travesty. There are several scenes in particular that make you realise how they got the 16:9 print, and that is simply by zooming and chopping. One of these scenes is when a secretary walks into a man's office, her head is not in the frame on the region 2 set, but it is in the region 1 set. My friend and I both noticed that her head was missing in the broadcast version. They simply upscaled the already lossy, information losing kludge they made for the R2 DVD set and broadcast it as HD.
